Conservative figures estimate that 4.2% of the population of Togo is HIV infected. The presence of such an epidemic is particularly disastrous in a country where misconceptions and stigmatisation are rampant. Victims - whilst already enduring the life crippling effects of the disease - are often rejected by their own family and a society that regards the virus as a curse that has resulted from prostitution.
